Topic 9: Organising and planning learning environments
As a preservice teacher, my limited experience working with children with disabilities has meant my understanding of inclusive practice is still developing. Reading Cologon and Mevawalla (2023) enhanced my insight into educators' legal responsibilities, particularly the Disability Discrimination Act 1992, which requires reasonable adjustments to support children’s participation. Gallagher (2023) further developed my understanding by highlighting that inclusion requires a collaborative approach, with educators preparing environments and practices to meet children’s needs. As a future educator, I can apply this knowledge by consulting with families, collaborating with colleagues and making adjustments such as using visual supports, adapting learning environments and allowing additional time for transitions. This resource reinforced that inclusive practice involves identifying and reducing barriers to participation, ensuring all children have opportunities to learn, participate and belong.
