Topic 11: Inclusivity and diversity
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) first introduced me to educators' responsibilities to embed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in early childhood practice. However, I recognised that I needed to develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages. Ewing et al. (2016) broadened my understanding of the importance of listening to authentic Aboriginal voices and using quality children’s literature that respectfully represents contemporary cultures and languages. Yarning Crescent (2026) will further support my development by providing practical guidance on embedding Aboriginal culture meaningfully in everyday teaching, rather than treating it as an isolated cultural activity. In my future practice, I aim to use authentic resources, reflect on how First Nations perspectives are represented, and build respectful relationships with local communities to ensure that it is culturally responsive.
